iTunes 8.1 and a Closer Look At Accessibility

Our initial look through iTunes 8.1 with VoiceOver has revealed a number of accessibility enhancements and fixes, in addition to a marked improvement in performance. Some things to note are:

  • At the top of the main window there is now an "LCD" scroll area, which provides information and controls related to the currently playing song. This area will only display an Apple logo if nothing is playing. Pressing VO-Space on the artist/album title in this area will toggle between display the artist name and the album from whence the song originates.
  • The Downloads area now reads properly with VoiceOver
  • The Genius sidebar HTML area seems to be working more smoothly with VoiceOver

So far, the only noticeable deficiency seems to be that the "Multiple Speakers" dialog box for the AirTunes feature does not appear to read with VoiceOver.

Overall, a fantastic update with solid improvements. Thank you, Apple.
